Fuego didn't just erupt. It escalated — methodically, over nearly 24 hours — until pyroclastic density currents were racing down six separate ravines simultaneously. The eruption entered a paroxysmal phase overnight on 3–4 August and has triggered a Institutional Orange Alert, the evacuation of at least 1,700 people, and the closure of a major highway. What makes this event genuinely significant isn't just the scale. It's where those flows went.
At 01:15 local time on 4 August, INSIVUMEH confirmed pyroclastic density currents descending the Las Lajas ravine on Fuego's southeastern flank. This is the same ravine that killed at least 169 people in June 2018. National Route 14 — which crosses Las Lajas near San Juan Alotenango, and was buried in 2018 — has been closed by PROVIAL between km 83 and km 103.
How the Eruption Developed
INSIVUMEH logged the start of the eruptive phase at approximately 08:30 local time (14:30 UTC) on 3 August. Over the following seven hours, the volcano emitted intense gas, ash and lava fragments while monitoring parameters rose continuously. By 16:00 local time, nine higher-amplitude seismic events had been logged and pyroclastic density currents were confirmed heading into the Seca ravine on the western flank, reaching 5 to 7 km from the crater. Ash columns reached 5,000 to 6,000 m above sea level and dispersed more than 40 km to the west.
After more than 11 hours of continuous activity, at 20:00 local time, currents were descending both the Seca and Ceniza ravines on the southwestern flank simultaneously. The eruption had developed a lava fountain measuring 200 to 300 m above the crater. CONRED declared the Institutional Orange Alert and ordered evacuations of El Porvenir, Las Lajitas and surrounding communities. By 21:15 local time, ash was dispersing up to 130 km to the southwest.
At 01:15 local time on 4 August, the situation escalated further. INSIVUMEH confirmed pyroclastic density currents in the Las Lajas and Honda ravines on the southeastern flank — in addition to those already active in Seca, Taniluyá and Ceniza. A sixth ravine, Trinidad on the northeastern flank, was also reported active. INSIVUMEH warned that the next 72 hours would be critical.
The Six Active Ravines
Fuego's flanks are cut by a series of deep ravines that channel pyroclastic flows and lahars away from the summit crater. Which ravines are active during a paroxysmal event tells you which communities are threatened and how the eruption is evolving. By 01:15 on 4 August, six were confirmed simultaneously active:

The Las Lajas Question
You cannot report on this eruption without confronting Las Lajas directly. On 3 June 2018, pyroclastic density currents descended this ravine and overwhelmed the communities of San Miguel Los Lotes, El Rodeo and the La Reunión resort. At least 169 people were confirmed dead; 256 remain listed as missing and presumed dead. A subsequent investigation found a communications breakdown between CONRED and INSIVUMEH had delayed evacuation orders to the communities most directly in the flow path.
In the current eruption, INSIVUMEH specifically named Las Lajas as an active PDC corridor from 01:15 local time on 4 August. Guatemala's Road Protection Agency (PROVIAL) closed National Route 14 between km 83 and km 103 — the same stretch that was buried in 2018. The Ministry of Education suspended in-person classes in El Porvenir, Escuintla and Yepocapa. Acatenango Volcano National Park restricted access to both Acatenango and Fuego until further notice.
No casualties confirmed — and why that matters
As of 4 August, no casualties have been confirmed. CONRED attributes this directly to faster, more coordinated evacuations rebuilt after the 2018 disaster. The improved response is deliberate — and it is the most important institutional change that has happened on this volcano since that eruption. The same ravine is active. The outcome so far is different.
